Application: In-Home Support Worker
Background Information
Clients:
MBHA works with children ages 5 - 21 who have mental retardation, autism, or mental health problems.
Work Sites:
Support workers work one on one with a child, in the child's home and community. Supervisors meet with support workers in clients' homes, or nearby. Staff must be prepared to work on their own most of the time, without direct supervision. Staff come to the MBHA office in Brunswick for their interview, for one or more orientation and training sessions. Staff gather four times a year for trainings and staff meetings, usually in the Augusta area.
Qualifications:
Proof of high school graduation or GED
Good driving record, dependable vehicle, proof of auto insurance
A year's experience with children (could be volunteer work, raising your own children, caring for relatives)
Pay, Hours:
For work with children, pay is $9 - $12.00/ hour. The work is usually 15-20 hours for one client, in late afternoons, early evenings. If the support worker and the family are both interested, the worker may work on weekends. There may be extra hours available during school vacations.
If schedules permit, a support worker may work with more than one client.
Training:
During the first six months of work, the support worker must complete 50 of training leading to a Behavior Specialist 1 certification. The training includes Typical Child and Family Development, Atypical child development, Trauma, Communication Skills, Principals of Behavior, Principals of Instruction, and other topics. Staff must also obtain certification in first aid, infant/child CPR, and blood borne pathogens. For training time, staff members are paid $6.35 an hour.
Process and Job Description
When a child is referred to MBHA, a clinician an assessment of the child and works with the child's family and case manager to develop a treatment plan. The support worker's role is to follow the activities listed in the treatment plan, with periodic supervision. The support worker may teach daily living skills, anger management, safety skills, social skills, and/or task completion. Staff are expected to use their creativity in making skill development and behavior management interesting and fun for the child.
